Public Consultation – Proposed Options
From 22 June to 17 July 2026
The proposed Cahir to Clonmel Greenway is a key active travel project being progressed by Tipperary County Council. The scheme aims to deliver a high-quality, accessible greenway linking Cahir and Clonmel, providing a safe and attractive route for walking and cycling.
The study area is characterised by a rich natural landscape, with scenic views, cultural heritage assets, and proximity to the River Suir. The greenway is intended to enhance connectivity between the towns while offering a recreational amenity for both residents and visitors. The primary purpose of the project is to provide a dedicated off-road route for leisure and active travel. It will support sustainable transport objectives by encouraging a shift towards walking and cycling, while also promoting tourism and local economic activity.
Project Objectives:
- Improve Safety – Provide a safe, sustainably segregated route for pedestrians and cyclists, minimising interaction with vehicular traffic.
- Promote Active Travel – Encourage walking and cycling as sustainable modes of transport for both leisure and everyday journeys.
- Enhance Connectivity – Establish a continuous and accessible link between Cahir and Clonmel, improving connectivity to local communities, services, and amenities.
- Support Tourism and Recreation – Deliver a high-quality greenway that enhances the recreational offering of the area and attracts domestic and international visitors.
- Protect Environment and Heritage – Avoid, reduce, and mitigate potential impacts on the natural environment, biodiversity, and cultural heritage assets.
- Sustainable Development – Contribute to national and regional climate action targets by promoting low-carbon transport and sustainable land use.
- Integrate with Existing Infrastructure – Ensure compatibility with existing and planned transport networks, including links to public transport and local walking/cycling routes.
Why your say matters?
Tipperary County Council is currently progressing Phase 2 – Options Selection in accordance with TII Project Manager’s Manual for Greenways. Feedback received during the first public consultation has been reviewed and considered alongside a range of environmental, engineering, and heritage constraints to identify a number of feasible route corridor options.
The project team is now undertaking a further round of public consultation to seek feedback on the identified options. This stage of consultation provides an opportunity for stakeholders and members of the public to contribute local knowledge, highlight potential constraints, and identify opportunities associated with each option. All submissions received will be considered as part of the option selection process to inform the identification of a preferred route corridor.
